Time flies. In just a blink of an eye, here comes Chinese New Year, a celebration of harmony and prosperity! With this in mind, Zuan Yuan @ One World Hotel has specially hand picked some well known dishes in their restaurant and incorporate them in their Chinese New Year Festive Menus.

Yee Sang with Soft Shell Crab and Condiments

The food we had that day was actually selected from a few festive menus. The feast first started with Yee Sang with Soft Shell Crab and Condiments, a dish that Chinese cannot run away from eating during Chinese New Year as it signifies prosperity and abundance. The higher you toss it, the better your growth in fortunes is!

What’s most special about their Yee Sang is it comes with Soft Shell Crab! The crunchiness and taste of it was addictive, it got snapped up pretty fast! The plate of colorful Yee Sang lifted up everyone’s mood as we chanted all the great mantras like “More money! More diamond! Stay young always!”.

After the scrumptious Yee Sang, we were served with Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Dried Scallop, Fish Lips and Crab Meat. I know many friends of mine who avoid eating shark’s fin now to save the sharks so be rest assured that you can request them not to serve it with shark’s fin. The thick soup is filled with dried scallop, succulent fish lips and crab meat, it’s so flavorful on its own.

Fish is one of the must-order dish for Chinese New Year as it signifies 年年有余, meaning “Abundance through the year”. Steamed Star Garouper‘s meat was a little firm in texture but it goes well with the sauce and I admire the use of Mandarin Orange Skin in it to remove the fishy taste. The fresh bean curd was amazing, having the texture of smooth egg.

Zuan Yuan Crispy Roasted Duck

Zuan Yuan Crispy Roasted Duck was the highlight of the night as everyone went gaga over it! Zuan Yuan’s duck dishes has been quite famous for the longest time and I really recommend it. Unlike most of the duck I have tasted, the one in Zuan Yuan is very succulent, tender and not to mention, flavorful. Kids will definitely love the crispy duck skin!

Wok Fried Tiger Prawn with Oats and Chilli

Surprisingly, Wok Fried Tiger Prawn with Oats and Chilli wasn’t as spicy as I expected so it’s suitable for kids’ consumption too. It’s le boyfie’s favorite dish because he loves the aromatic fried oats to go with his bowl of white rice. The fresh prawns tasted just nice.

Braised Abalone with Dried Oyster and Sea Moss in ‘Golden’ Bag

I’d have to admit: I love Zuan Yuan’s creativity in Braised Abalone with Dried Oyster and Sea Moss in ‘Golden’ Bag because it brings of the feeling of prosperity and abundance visually. The yummy abalone looked like gold ingot here while beancurd has been made into the shape of a ‘golden’ bag, full of vegetables!

Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Assorted Preserved Meat, Chicken Sausage and Yam

Although everyone has started to feel a little full when this dish came out, I’d have to say that Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Assorted Preserved Meat, Chicken Sausage and Yam was worth trying. They were sensitive enough to use normal rice instead of glutinous rice because it would be too heavy for the tummy to take in after sampling so many dishes.

Last but not least, we had Pan Fried ‘Nian Gao’ with Cheddar Cheese and Chilled Soy Bean with Sea Coconut, Lotus Seed and Black Pearl as desserts. I have a feeling that youngsters would love Pan Fried ‘Nian Gao’ with Cheddar Cheese since it’s a fusion between Chinese and Western food. I personally love Chilled Soy Bean with Sea Coconut, Lotus Seed and Black Pearl. The black pearls reminded me of bubble tea! It was really refreshing and I think it’s a perfect dessert to end the meal and cool off the heat from all the fried and spicy food earlier. On consuming good food, it’s always about balance!
