The California Wine Institute (CWI) is marking the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris, the wine tasting that transformed global perceptions of California wines and cemented the region’s place among the world’s leading wine producers.
To commemorate this milestone and celebrate five decades of achievement, CWI is hosting a series of events across Asia, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Macau. The celebrations highlight both the legacy of the Judgment of Paris and the continued evolution of California wines through innovation, diversity, and sustainability.
The Kuala Lumpur event, held at The Pool House at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur on 19 June 2026, brought together more than 60 members of the trade and media for an evening dedicated to the past, present, and future of California winemaking.

The Wine Tasting That Changed Everything
Long before California became one of the world’s most respected wine regions, French wines were widely regarded as the undisputed benchmark for quality. That perception changed dramatically in 1976 when British wine merchant Steven Spurrier organised a blind tasting in Paris featuring top French wines alongside wines from California.
To the surprise of the wine establishment, California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon received the highest scores from a panel of French judges, outperforming several prestigious French labels. The result became known as the Judgment of Paris and remains one of the most significant moments in modern wine history.

The unexpected victory proved that exceptional wines could come from outside traditional European wine regions and firmly established California as a world-class wine-producing destination.
Celebrating 50 Years of California Wine Excellence
The spirit of the Judgment of Paris continues to shape California’s wine industry today. What started as a groundbreaking moment has evolved into a culture defined by innovation, diversity, sustainability, and a willingness to challenge convention.
According to Christopher Beros, Director for Greater China and Southeast Asia at California Wine Institute, the anniversary is about more than celebrating a historic win.

“The 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris isn’t just about celebrating a historic victory—it’s about showcasing how California has continued to lead the world in quality, innovation, and sustainability,” he said.
Today, California winemakers remain at the forefront of the industry, pioneering new techniques while championing sustainable practices that help preserve the region for future generations.
Kuala Lumpur Event Showcases Historic and Modern California Wines
Guests at the Kuala Lumpur celebration enjoyed a special screening of a documentary exploring the lasting impact of the Judgment of Paris and its role in reshaping the global wine landscape.

The evening also featured an impressive lineup of wines from wineries that participated in the original Judgment of Paris, alongside a curated selection representing the diversity and evolution of modern California winemaking.
Selected guests had the rare opportunity to taste wines from the wineries that achieved the highest scores during the historic tasting.
A Rare Chance to Taste Wine History
Among the highlights were wines from Chateau Montelena, whose Chardonnay famously triumphed in the white wine category, and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, whose Cabernet Sauvignon secured California’s victory in the red wine category.
These iconic wineries remain symbols of the moment that changed wine history and continue to produce wines admired around the world.
Beyond the historic labels, attendees explored a wider range of California wines, including Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. Often regarded as California’s signature grape, Zinfandel showcased another side of the state’s diverse winemaking heritage.
Exploring California’s Diverse Wine Regions
The tasting journey extended across some of California’s most celebrated wine-growing regions, including Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Lodi, and beyond.
Each region offered a unique expression of terroir and winemaking style, demonstrating why California remains one of the most dynamic and influential wine-producing regions in the world.
Fifty years after the Judgment of Paris, California wines continue to embody the pioneering spirit that first captured international attention in 1976—a spirit that remains as relevant today as ever.
